Salary: CAD $18.00 – $22.00 per hour

JOB DUTIES

Acting as a bridge between Canada and Japan on an international level, as well as between local Japanese Canadian and multicultural communities, we operate to provide Japanese language and cultural education, through our innovative and unique programming.  Our early childhood education program, Kodomo no Kuni exposes pre-schoolers to a second language at the earliest possible age and provides a Japanese language/culture-enriched day-school program.

We are looking to add to our dedicated team of Early Childhood Educator/Assistants.   Reporting to the Children’s World Manager, the incumbent works with the child-care staff to provide safe, quality and inclusive child-care programming for children in a group setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties (Culture Related)

• Create an immersive cultural environment by speaking to children in Japanese and supporting their development of the language through singing and reading well known Japanese language music and books
• Deliver experiences that model and foster an understanding of Japanese customs, culture, and value systems  
• Model behaviour expectations consistent with contemporary Japanese norms and the centre’s philosophy and policies
• In collaboration with the centre Head Supervisor and the Program Director, provide support in the Japanese language to families navigating intercultural challenges and opportunities
• Organize space, equipment and materials to create an environment that reflects Japanese educational practices

Duties (General)

• Provide opportunities for child directed play experiences
• Attend to children’s physical needs for eating, toileting and sleeping
• Use observations to expand play and plan activities that recognize individual needs
• Work cooperatively with the centre Head Supervisor, the Program Director and the staff team to obtain the community resources, to support inclusive practice and address the needs of individual children.
• In collaboration with the centre Head Supervisor and the Program Director, ensure that all individual plans are regularly reviewed and revised as needed
• Ensure child-care environment is healthy and safe
• Follow the licensing requirements and the centre’s procedures
• Maintain confidentiality regarding all information related to the children, families, and staff and fulfill obligations to respect protection of privacy
• Participate in short- and long-term planning, evaluation and the annual program review

REQUIREMENTS

• Early Childhood Education Assistant Certificate
• Valid First Aid/CPR Certificate
• Secondary (High) School Graduation Certificate
• Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Populations)
• Immunization record (VCH licensing guidelines)
  • Flu
  • Tetanus
  • MMR
  • Chickenpox
• Expert level knowledge of Japanese culture and customs, as demonstrated through five years of working or studying in Japan
• 2 years of experience as an ECEA required
• Physical ability to lift and assist children up to 15kg

Assets:

• Food Safe Certificate is an asset
