Manager of Organizational Change
This is a newly created position at Britannia, which will help manage, lead and guide the organization through systemic change with a Reconciliation lens. The manager recommends and facilitates positive change using a process that embraces Indigenizing of our workplace, spaces, and relationships with the community as part of our reconciliation and decolonization journey.
You are responsible for determining areas for change, making recommendation to relevant policy, governance areas, programs and services and where required supervising projects and staff in completing approved changes. This work includes administration and resource management of relevant projects and developing and monitoring of applicable budgets. You will bring Indigenous knowledge and approaches into Western systems using an Indigenous focus, but will also create an inclusive environment that reflects and embraces meaningful relationships for our organization, connecting institutional entities and endeavoring to reflect all members of our community (including Indigenous people, Two Spirit, Black and People of Colour, and LGBTQIA communities) in meaningful ways.
You will work with the Britannia Board of Management, Executive Director (ED), Committees, staff, and community, to review and analyze information, and make recommendations. This includes hiring, supervising, evaluating assigned staff; developing work plans and setting goals to achieve desired and agreed decolonization and reconciliation outcomes. Your responsibility includes making and explaining applicable policy recommendations on complex issues to the Board of Management.
While considerable independent judgement is exercised in the role, you report to, and discuss, new approaches, unusual problems and policy matters with the Executive Director of Britannia.
Assumes overall responsibility for recommendation, implementation, managing, administration and budget oversight of agreed reconciliation and decolonization initiatives, with a focus on needs of the organization and the Grandview Woodlands and Strathcona Neighborhoods of Vancouver.
Review and makes recommendations to Board on programs, policies and procedures related to Britannia’s relationship with local First Nations, Urban Indigenous communities, low income and other Communities. Where necessary develop new programs, policies and procedures.
Reports and explains recommendations and complex issues to the Board of Management, staff, community members and partners, in an effort to ensure buy in, and increased understanding of the needs for Decolonization and Reconciliation efforts.
Keeps current and maintains knowledge of legal developments relevant to the Society with respect to key areas such as UNDRIP, Human Rights legislation and policies developed in other public sector entities.
Develops budget for relevant programs/projects; monitors expenditures; seeks alternate sources of funding and prepares grant requests; prepares correspondence and reports and maintains related files and records.
Advises and facilitates learning for staff working in all departments of Britannia on protocols, engagement approaches, cultural sensitivity and activities, with local First Nations, Urban Indigenous communities, and People of Color e.g. Britannia renewal and areas for inclusion, reconciliation, and decolonization.
Implements, coordinates and supervises centre staff directly and through subordinate supervisors; helping select staff, providing or arranges for training and evaluating work performance applicable to reconciliation/decolonization programs and initiatives within the organization, including within centre programs for children, youth, adults, seniors and families, such as cultural and educational, social recreation, specialized short-term, child care, and summer programs.
Liaises with a variety of community organizations and groups to develop partnerships to address complex issues or responses, including integration of Britannia Centre services, programs and resources; coordinates with social agencies that have an impact on matters related to the work.
Develops and maintains effective community relations; promotes transparency with local residents and partners, encourages participation in Centre related activities; and provides information and obtains community input on Centre programs and services.
Key to this work is the ability to review, analyze, develop recommendations and take action to indigenize, decolonize and enhance reconciliation in the major organizational areas, and be involved in special projects such as the Britannia Renewal. Illustrative Examples of Work areas:
Organizational Culture, Society Governance, Policy and Decision making, Administration, Personnel Practices, Service Delivery, Community Relations and Communications.
1. Related relevant experience supplemented by applicable education or course of study. E.g. university degree in First Nations studies, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Communications, or Law; or an equivalent combination of training and experience, including lived experience.
2. Working with Indigenous and culturally diverse Populations: Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse communities in culturally sensitive, informed, tactful and open ways. Ability to build and maintain effective and resilient working relationships with internal and external parties, including First Nations, local urban Indigenous, Black and People of Colour organizations, government and institutions under circumstances that may be political and sensitive.
3. Resourcefulness and knowledge of municipal, provincial, regional and corporate programs, policies, and procedures applicable to Indigenous issues and interests in British Columbia.
4. Communication: Good written, oral and presentation skills, effective at motivating and communicating ideas to diverse audiences in public arenas, including the ability to effectively listen, persuade others, and resolve complex problems using a high degree of independent judgment. Consensus building skills is the goal that requires the ability to facilitate collective solutions; address complex problems and assist to bridge differences in peoples world views.
5. Administration and Management: Sound budgeting and financial management skills.
6. Grant writing and fundraising: experience researching grants, completing grant applications, and engaging in fundraising planning and activities
7. Change Management: Demonstrated understanding of change management principles and practices. Proven ability to use judgment to resolve complex problems and develop new procedures and systems.
8. Leadership of projects with community partners, Board of Management, and Committees: Attention to detail and demonstrated flexibility to adjust to changing circumstances.
9. Personnel and Team management: Ability to supervise, coach and guide others, while enhancing individual and team effectiveness.
10.Technology: Proficiency using Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
Salary Range: $90,000 – $100,000 per annum plus benefits.
