Description
The MTBM Operator is responsible for the safe, technical, and economical operation of the tunnel boring machine, through the control container, to ensure project is executed within the approved schedule and according to project parameters. This position reports to the Equipment Manager.
1. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Operate the tunnel boring machine according to provided tunnelling parameters
· Actively participate in TMB system assembly and disassembly during mobilization and demobilization periods
· Responsible for daily maintenance and routine repairs of tunnel boring machine
· Complete Inspection Test Plans on all TMB utility connections
· Monitor line and grade to ensure alignment remains within tolerances described in project plans and specifications
· Participate in tailgate and operations meetings, and assist with the issuance of daily reports
· Assist with equipment troubleshooting
· Participate in pre-planning meetings with management and sub-contractors
· Maintain accurate records of jacking operations per specified forms
Supervising Responsibilities
Oversee the tunneling work when the machine is in motion. Maintain various supervisory responsibilities during pre-launching and testing of the MTBM machine. May supervise a small crew during tunneling, of those who prepare the shaft or fix pipes in launch shaft, before tunneling can commence. Train new junior MTBM operators.
2. Key Technical Skills and Knowledge
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
· A demonstrated understanding of tunneling procedures, using a microtunnel boring machine
· Experience with mircrotunnel boring machines and slurry system operations
· Technical and practical experience in executing and managing tunneling projects
3. Physical Demand
· While performing the duties of this job, requirements include prolonged standing, walking and/or sitting.
· Computer / control station work is also required which will involve visual focus on screens and documents.
· Manual dexterity required to handle/feel objects, tools, and controls.
· Occasionally requirement to climb stairs and/or ladders, balance, stoop or kneel and/or walk on uneven ground.
· Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
· Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
· Good hearing – able to hear equipment alarms, voices, radio transmissions, and other noises consistent with construction sites
· Working in all weather conditions, inside and outside
4. Qualifications
· Education – An education in the tunneling or oil field industry, such as Operator, Driller, Heavy Duty Machinery Operator, or comparable field experience
· Experience – At least 4 years of specialized experience in the field
· Relevant work experience with Micro-tunneling Machines and/or Direct Pipe technology
5. Other Relevant Information
· This position is assigned field locations during operations, and to the yard and office during off seasons.
· Extended periods of working away and travel is required in this position.
· This is a permanent position.
Wage:
$600-850 daily for 12 hours shift paid bi-weekly
Vacation:
6% of earnings, in lieu of paid vacation and 15 days of unpaid vacation annually
