Investor Office staff strive for excellence in everything they do. The Investor Office (www.InvestorOffice.ca) is a regulatory operations branch of the OSC created in 2015. The Investor Office sets the strategic direction and leads the OSC’s efforts in investor engagement, education, outreach and research. The Investor Office also has a policy function, plays a key role in the oversight of the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments (OBSI), and provides leadership in the area of behavioural insights at the OSC.

Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Investor Research and Behavioural Insights, the Senior Advisor, Behavioural Insights, will contribute to thought leadership and applied research in behavioural insights at the OSC. The Senior Advisor will play a key role in designing and executing testing, experimentation, and evaluation using behavioural science methods. The Senior Advisor will help advance the OSC’s efforts to enhance capacity and understanding of the benefits of the application of behavioural insights at the OSC and beyond.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Behavioural Insights Research Program Leadership

  • Lead behavioural insights research projects, including procurement, vendor relations, and dissemination of results to ensure maximum impact and reach.
  • Provide advice to the Manager on the development, prioritization and implementation of the behavioural insights research portfolio aligned with OSC and Investor Office objectives.
  • Design and implement experiments, including randomized control trials in field and online environments.
  • Provide behavioural insights support and advice on regulatory policy initiatives to other members of the Investor Office team.
  • Make internal behavioural insights presentations to the Commission, the Executive Director, directors of branches, and other OSC staff with the Manager, Director, or other Investor Office staff.
  • Provide advice and support on other investor research projects.

Liaison and Thought Leadership

  • Develop position and research papers for public and internal audiences.
  • Present results from behavioural insights research at conferences/events.
  • Work with the Manager to liaise with key staff within the OSC, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) and external stakeholders to formulate and provide behavioural insights advice on regulatory policy and operational processes and other strategic issues.

Capacity and Capability building within the OSC

  • Develop and execute an outreach plan for continued engagement with OSC staff to educate and engage key personnel in understanding, participating in, and supporting the incorporation of behavioural insights into their work.

Who you are

  • Passionate and curious when it comes to exploring behavioural challenges that trip up retail investors and other market participants, and identifying how we might use behavioural insights to address them.
  • Relevant experience applying behavioural insights and leading complex research projects.
  • Significant knowledge of behavioural science research methods and data analysis capabilities.
  • Experience analyzing experimental data using econometrics and other advanced statistical techniques in R, Stata, Excel or similar.
  • Superior communications skills, both written and oral.
  • Works well with individuals at all levels and across sectors and jurisdictions.
  • Committed to capacity and capability-building across groups with varying levels of knowledge and awareness of behavioural insights.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate behavioural insights applications, concepts and empirical evidence in a clear and meaningful way across diverse audiences (public policy, financial, academic, public interest).
  • Knowledge of policy development and financial markets is an asset.
