We are seeking an experienced leader to take on the Senior Manager, Indigenous Relations position in Edmonton, AB.
The Senior Manager, Indigenous Relations is accountable for ensuring EPCOR Utilities Inc. and its business lines meets its obligations and commitments to Indigenous Nations and communities, enhances the relationship between EPCOR and Indigenous Nations and communities, and supports the implementation of EPCOR’s Indigenous Relations initiatives within the company.
The Senior Manager will lead the development of capacity across EPCOR’s of the lines of business and corporate services to deliver on the company’s commitments to Indigenous engagement on initiatives, projects and operations.
The Senior Manager leads EPCOR’s rights-based engagement activities, including building and maintaining relationships with consultation offices, construction monitoring programs, and tracking of the company’s commitments and actions.
In collaboration with internal stakeholders, EPCOR’s Indigenous Relations Steering Committee, and the Government & Indigenous Relations team, the Senior Manager will advance equitable employment opportunities, the creation of an inclusive workplace, and Indigenous business development.
As a result of their work, EPCOR is a trusted partner to Indigenous Nations and communities, building meaningful relationships and successfully implementing its commitments and initiatives, and is effective in monitoring its performance against its objectives and develops and implements the strategies and action plans needed to achieve these targets.
The Senior Manager leads EPCOR’s certification in the CCAB Progressive Aboriginal Relations program, including collaborating with all lines of business, including Corporate Services, on their required measures, actions, and reporting in the program.
The Senior Manager, Indigenous Relations is accountable to the Director, Sustainability & Public Affairs and operates within the context and prescribed limits established by the SVP, Sustainability, General Council & Corporate Secretary.
What you’d be responsible for
- Developing and executing operational plans aligning with strategic objectives, focusing on one to two year goals, annual work plans, and team member targets.
- Lead in seeking and executing innovative strategies to enhance EPCOR’s Indigenous engagement program, promoting ongoing growth, adaptability to meet the demands of internal partners and Indigenous communities.
- Effective monitoring of the internal and external environment, measurement of team and business performance, effective collaboration processes, and continuous improvement in service delivery.
- Managing budget allocation for EPCOR’s Indigenous Relations activities that exclude projects specific expenses, ensuring operational support and efficiency.
- Establish and communicate clear priorities and actions for the annual work plan.
- Consulting with stakeholders to create understanding about issues, concerns, or opportunities.
- Assessing organizational readiness to engage in change efforts and develop and execute change management plans to promote engagement and mitigate risks.
- Fostering positive relationships with key First Nations, Metis Nations/communities and other rights-holder advocacy groups, in the context of project approvals / exercise of rights, expanding or developing commercial partnership opportunities, and in the context of fostering long-term relationships.
What’s required to be successful
- Bachelors Degree in Arts, Indigenous Studies, Anthropology, Community Development or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Expert knowledge of Indigenous history and culture, protocols, governance, approaches to engagement and consultation that fosters respectful involvement with Indigenous Nations and communities.
- Ability to effectively communicate through discussion and conversation with Elders and Knowledge holders of all First Peoples.
- Knowledge of archeological practices, methods and processes and established network with archeologists in Alberta is an asset.
- Ability to speak an Indigenous language is an asset
- Strong project management skills, with a proven ability to manage and monitor multiple overlapping projects and timelines for timeliness, cost, quality, and regulatory/legal compliance.
This role requires the successful candidate to travel within Edmonton and outside of Alberta in their own vehicle, physically attend and/or participate in the Monitoring Program, and ideally ability to participate in ceremonies. This role may be eligible for our Where We Work hybrid program.
