Position: BC Seed Security Program Assistant

Location: (Primarily) FarmFolk CityFolk’s Vancouver Island seed farm hub site at the Sandown Centre for Regenerative Agriculture, North Saanich, Capital Region

Position Summary
Reporting to the BC Seed Security Program Manager, FFCF is seeking a knowledgeable and skilled person to assist our BC Seed Security Program team. This program is delivered partly in partnership with SeedChange (formerly USC Canada) Canadian field program, The Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security (BFICSS). The role is to help support on-farm research and seed conservation and plant breeding, and to engage the public in seed growing and saving.
Responsibilities:
Assisting the delivery of the Seed Security programming, may include, but is not limited to:
Working at the field site at Sandown Farm at 1810 Glamorgan Rd, North Saanich. This will include farm work: planting, transplanting, weeding, watering, and record keeping
Possibly support farmer and community member use of our Mobile Seed Trailer
Assist at on-farm and off-farm training events for farmers, including field days, workshops, and webinars
Communicate effectively about the society and programming
Supporting the wide range of BC Seeds initiatives, including Citizen Seed Trial, Public Seed events, and other FarmFolk CityFolk program related initiatives.
Keep organized and thorough operational records of program data, results, contacts, and operational details
Hiring Requirements
Farming experience a strong asset
Construction/building skills and experience an asset
Strong interpersonal skills and experience/willingness to work in a highly collaborative, team-oriented environment
Valid driver’s license and ability to tow a trailer is an asset
Physical mobility, and willingness to move through a range of outdoor work environments, including lifting, rock picking and digging
Familiar with word-processing, wordpress websites, GSuite, and email and access to a computer an asset
The position is dependent on partial funding through a subsidy program, which requires the candidate to be:
30 years of age or under
Unemployed, a student, or underemployed
A Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident

Role details

End Date: December 15, 2024 with the possibility of extension
There is flexibility with this position and part-time hours could range from 7-21 hours per week based on finding the right candidate and pending funding. The timing of hours can be flexible based on tasks required.
Wage is $23-$25/ hour plus 4% vacation pay.
The role is based primarily at the Sandown Farm site, and is suitable for someone who lives nearby and/or can easily get there. Some work may be done from home.
