PART-TIME POSITION AVAILABLE
COMMUNITY RELATIONS COORDINATOR – INDIGENOUS PROGRAM
Reporting to the Director of Education and Public Programs and working closely with other Public Programs Coordinators the incumbent works to strengthen Indigenous arts, culture, awareness and understanding; and incorporating First Nations and Indigenous perspectives for effective engagement. The incumbent participates and represents the Public Programs department as a member of the Gallery’s Indigenous Relations Working Group (IRWG) supporting the Gallery’s engagement with the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action and the United Nations Declaration of Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) regarding public institutions including museums. Participates in other Gallery committees and working groups.
DUTIES
Collaborates with Public Programs coordinators within the Vancouver Art Gallery to organize and deliver programs focused on supporting and learning from diverse voices including Indigenous artists and communities.
Acts as an Advisor to the Education and Public Programs and other Gallery departments on ways to advance arts and culture goals related to xʷməθkʷəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) communities.
As a member of the Gallery’s Indigenous Relations Working Group (IRWG) is responsible for tracking and reporting the IRWG budget and making recommendations.
Supports the development of a program of cultural sensitivity training and encouraging new ways of working at the Gallery.
Researches and recommends through consultation, and puts forward protocols regarding Indigeneity at the Gallery, including territorial acknowledgement, openings and other events.
Fosters communication across Gallery and stakeholders.
Prepares and delivers presentations to Gallery staff on the IRWG’s actions and the Indigenous Engagement Plan development.
Supports the Gallery’s involvement in and advancement on the TRC’s calls to action for museums, public and educational institutions, as well as the UNDRIP.
Develops a network of relationships for the Gallery that includes the host nations and key people in the culture sector in BC and beyond.
Centralizes the protocols and procedures relating to Indigenous communities for Gallery-wide use.
Provides support and research towards consultation and development of Indigenous content and relationship to the new Gallery building initiative.
QUALIFICATIONS
University graduate from a recognized university in a related field or equivalent experience.
Incumbent of xʷməθkʷəy̓ əm (Musqueam) Band, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations is an asset. Additional language is an asset.
Knowledge of the protocols and procedures to develop relationships with Indigenous knowledge keepers and translate this broadly throughout a museum context; knowledge of Indigenous cultural groups, leaders, artists and other Indigenous stakeholders (business, education, etc.); knowledge and understanding of the diversity of Indigenous traditional and contemporary knowledge and expertise;
experience in stewarding relationships with existing and potential Indigenous community members, artists, practitioners, and Indigenous organisations in the wider Vancouver community; ability to learn and facilitate matters of First Nations cultural protocol, cultural sovereignty, cultural safety and a willingness to build on understanding these matters among local Indigenous communities and the Vancouver Art Gallery; ability to build relationships and facilitate collaborative decision making across divergent worldviews, language, and interests; ability to help embed Indigenous voices into gallery and museum processes, respectfully communicate gallery missions and values and facilitate dialogue; ability to assess barriers and make strategic recommendations to strengthen relationships, facilitate learning, and demonstrably improve access for Indigenous people; ability to work cooperatively and creatively; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including public speaking; ability to be well organized and to exercise sound judgement and flexibility in a dynamic environment and ability to represent the Gallery with a high level of integrity, professionalism and confidentiality
SALARY: Pay Grade 23 Step 1 $29.82 per hour
HOURS: Flexible work schedule, 56 hours bi-weekly, 4 days per week
