About the Opportunity

Currently, the Windigo First Nation Council (WFNC) is looking for a full-time Emergency Response Advisor/Disaster Recovery Advisor based in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. The successful candidate will work with the WFNC communities to establish, implement, and review emergency management policies and procedures that ensure a safe environment for all members. Your primary objective will be to develop capacity within the communities and partners through the four pillars of emergency management. 

Reporting to the Water Operations and Fire Safety Director, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Creating and nurturing relationships with the community leaders through in-person visits, virtual meetings, phone calls, and email
  • Working with each First Nation to develop and review established emergency plans and protocols
  • Visiting each community quarterly and facilitating discussion and planning
  • Helping to identify community-specific emergency concerns for all hazards, including risk management
  • Assisting with mitigation planning to identify possible issues and vulnerabilities, and take measures to prevent or reduce the consequences of emergencies
  • Aiding with activities designed to encourage all-hazard planning for response-recovery during emergencies
  • Participating with communities’ response activities, including the support of local coordination and outside resources
  • Assisting First Nations with the completion of funding applications and applicable program funding
  • Identifying, planning and facilitating appropriate training for communities
  • Coordinating third parties hired to manage affected communities during emergency situations, using the four pillars of emergency management
  • Producing quarterly reports, including the following: pre- & post-site reports, training plans, learning plan report, financial reporting

About You

To qualify for this role, you will need at least 5 years of experience working in Emergency Management, Policing, Fire Prevention, or First Response, as well as a post secondary degree or diploma in a discipline pertinent to the job function such as Emergency Management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

General knowledge or background in the following are also required to succeed in this role:

  • Familiarity with the IMS system
  • Computer proficiency in software programs (e.g., MS Office Suite, email, etc)
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to travel regularly

In addition, the following knowledge, skills, and education are considered assets, but are not required:

  • Understanding of Aboriginal cultural traditions and practices
  • Familiarity with the First Nation leadership structure and function within communities
  • Ability to communicate in Oji-Cree
  • Experience in First Response

Due to the nature of the role, it is crucial that you possess outstanding interpersonal skills, innate ability to connect and build relationships within a tight-knit community, flexibility in handling unpredictable situations, and passion in truly making a difference. You will also be a superior communicator and be able to adapt conventional emergency preparedness tactics and apply them to a remote First Nations setting.
