Description

The Children’s Cottage Society is a charitable agency established in Calgary in 1986. The Society’s mission is “Building strong children and safe nurturing families through prevention programs and support services” and our vision is “Resilient children blossom in healthy families.”

The Housing Locator works collaboratively with the Case Management team to find and secure housing for families participating in the HomeLinks Program. The primary role is to build relationships with landlords and property managers to find safe, secure, and affordable housing for clients.  This position is ideal for someone who is exceptionally organized, enjoys the challenge of winning others over, thrives in a fast-paced work environment, has exceptional administrative skills, and enjoys collaborating with peers both within and external to the organization.

The HomeLinks Housing Locator position is full time (40 hours per week).  Hours are Monday to Friday; some evening and weekend work may be required. Work hours will be adjusted based on client needs.  This is a mobile position with a primary workspace located in our Bowness office.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in human services (preferred), or diploma with additional experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with families who have complex needs
  • Experience working with homeless families
  • Experience working in with families in the community and in their home is required
  • Experience with housing location is an asset
  • Valid Standard First Aid Certificate with CPR level C
  • Valid Suicide Intervention training.
  • Valid driver’s license and use of own vehicle
  • Current Police Clearance and Child Intervention Record checks with satisfactory results
  • Able to adjust hours during the evenings and on weekends as needed

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work well independently and as a collaborative member of a team
  • Excellent networking and advocacy skills
  • Excellent judgement: think critically, and tackle ambiguity and complex problems effectively and efficiently
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to remain positive and work through difficult housing markets
  • Proficient computer skills required
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Teams, and Outlook.
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Excel
  • Knowledge of Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) is an asset
  • Knowledge of Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) is an asset
  • Highly organized and efficient
  • Have a thorough understanding of the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) as well as Housing First and Harm Reduction best practices

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Sourcing, identifying and sharing housing resources for the purpose of re-housing families in the community
  • Develop and maintaining relationships with landlords and property management agencies that are in the best interest of the Homelinks Program and participants
  • Coordinating the disbursement of program funds for damage deposit and first month’s rent, as required and where funds are not available through Alberta Works or other sources
  • Supporting Case Managers in implementing their service plans to assist families with housing location
  • Coordinate furniture delivery with client
  • Assess level, and approximate cost, of damage to a unit to quickly determine if a repairs budget should be requested
  • Maintaining a data base of housing resources for staff and client use.
  • Being fully informed on the RTA and serving as a resource to staff and families on issues related to the Act
  • Determine safety and appropriateness of units (according to Alberta Health Services Minimum Housing and Health Standards)
  • Maintain knowledge and relationship with Calgary area subsidized housing agencies.
  • Coordinate and/or attend lease signings and walk trough’s ensuring terms of the lease agreement meet RTA standards
  • Administrative Duties: Tracking housing placements, updating spreadsheets, filling relevant paperwork in client files
  • Assist clients with viewing potential homes and reviewing rental and subsidy applications
  • Collaborate with other housing locators and liaisons to discuss best practices as well as ongoing unit availability
  • Attend and actively participate in program staff meetings
  • Other related duties as required by the Program Supervisor
